A miscalculation on the load top for an excavator being transported on a flatbed resulted within the rig smashing right into a pedestrian overcrossing at Cabrillo Faculty in Aptos Monday.
The California Freeway Patrol stated on social media at 1:20 p.m. that the crash occurred on westbound Soquel Drive simply east of Cabrillo Faculty Drive. The posted top on the overcrossing is 15 ft, and the excavator’s arm appeared to have struck it a minimum of a foot above it.
Soquel Drive traverses the campus in addition to the communities of Soquel, Stay Oak and Aptos. The CHP stated it was unknown when the westbound lanes would open and drivers have been directed to make use of northbound Freeway 1 and Perimeter Highway as an alternate routes.
